All students at this school are very serious about ballet; this was not the case at her previous pre-professional school. We also were commuting an hour each way minimum to her pre-professional school. Her commute to her studio now involves an elevator ride. However, there were trade-offs. No more privates and competitions, and no opportunities for performance, other than a Gala this year. Without the competition piece, her focus on the small details has improved. I would like to rebut the perception that this school "cherry picks" students from around the world and "finishes" them.
No student, my daughter included, is technically or artistically perfect at age 14, 15 or There is still a lot of training to be done at this age. It was OUR decision to come over at this time due to her ability to handle being away from home. They try to cap the advanced levels at So, the sooner after age 14 the better, in my opinion.

Just wanted to offer a different perception for what might be happening when teenage dancers transfer over, and for what reasons. They do cherry-pick their advanced dancers in the sense that very few of them begin as children in SAB. Most of the younger ones in SAB are whittled out by about age 12 or so. Therefore, although City Ballet can claim to "train" their own dancers as they all attend advanced SAB, the truth is that without the proper body proportions, flexibility and natural giftedness as pre-requisites, most dancing children will never be accepted into the advanced levels.
Most of the advanced students trained elsewhere as children. I was also a little confused about the CH levels, it seems as though they would be for the youngest kids, I'm guessing 6 and 7 year olds but if there are only 2 age groups then why would there be 5 levels? Overall I'm just curious roughly how old the kids are in each level.
The classes are not always by age. True the very young ones are in the lower levels and only take 2 one hour classes a week. SAB used to take students starting at age 8 Girls I and up but since around I think they have started with 6 year olds. That is what CH is all about. They take a lot of students at that age and they are divided up to to many groups. Anything before level B is considered beginner.
B starts intermediate level training and C is advanced. Students must be invited back to continue each year.

Intermediate and Advanced Men take classes for conditioning and strengthening the musculature of the upper body, thereby enhancing partnering skills.
Phoebe Higgins, an SAB alumna and certified Pilates instructor, provides mat classes in the Pilates conditioning method. A fully-developed physical therapy program is administered by our licensed professionals, who conduct seminars on stretching, strengthening and injury prevention.
During the final two weeks, promising young choreographers will create new works using a selection of the most advanced summer students. Pointe work is undertaken when the student has learned basic technique and when her legs and feet are sufficiently developed. Students begin introductory pointe work in Girls IV. The system of physical exercise involved in acrobatic gymnastics is in sharp contrast to the musically determined dynamic of classical ballet. However, gymnastics is a powerful aid in the development of muscular strength and control. Students enrolled in Boys IV take a weekly introductory adagio classes to learn fundamental partnering skills and etiquette.
